Dr C P Ho 何仲平醫生 graduated in the Medical Faculty of the Hong Kong University and had his nephrology training in Glasgow and Canada.  In addition to Nephrology practice, he is also actively involved in nephrology training in Hong Kong.  He organized a series of renal education lectures to fellow doctors and renal nursing courses to train renal nurses.  He has founded the Hong Kong Nephrology Group with a group of nephrologists and nephrology nurses dedicated to improving the renal service in Hong Kong.  He was the chairman of the group since its founding in 2012.

Dr Ho held the view that kidney diseases can only be contained by early detection and patient empowerment.  He is organizes a kidney awareness program in conjunction with the Hong Kong Medical Association.  In March 20, 2016, he organized a Diabetic Kidney Camp for over 100 diabetic patients and their relatives and was well received.

To help the family doctors to manage diabetic kidney disease, Dr Ho designed an apps which can be downloaded by medical professionals to be used for free.

Dr Ho believed that renal transplantation is the best form of renal replacement therapy.  He was active in organ donation activities and he was a member of the Human Organ Transplant Board.  In 1987, he set up the Hong Kong Medical Association (HKMA) Computerized Organ Donation Registry and it had  over 40,000 donors.  The concept was adopted by the Hong Kong Government and the Hong Kong Central Organ Donation Registry (CODR) was setup and the HKMA requested the willing organ donors to register with the CODR as well.

Dr Ho produced an online renal educational video site called ‘Kidney Classroom’ and published a book on kidney education called ‘Save your kidneys’, both online and in print.

In July, 2007, he was awarded the Medal of Honour by the Government of the HKSAR.  In July, 2010, he was appointed Justice of the Peace, JP, by the Chief Executive of the HKSAR.

In November 2015, he was awarded Teaching Excellence Award by the Li Ka Shing Institute of Professional and Continuing Education (LiPace), Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK) for his work in the renal nurse training.

Ms Au joined the Centre in 1990 in the capacity of a dialysis nurse.  In addition to her in-house training, she attended 8 certificate renal courses organized by the Centre in conjunction with Hong Kong Baptist Hospital, Lion’s Kidney Educational and Research Centre and the Hong Kong Kidney Foundation.

She is now the Centre Manager and the Charge nurse.  She is also responsible for the training of staff in the Centre.

 

Staff Training

All the nurses in the Centre had studied  and passed  the Professional Certificate in Renal Nursing which is recognized as a Qualification Level 4 course (in the Hong Kong Qualifications Framework under the Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications Ordinance)

All the staff had to be trained in infection control measures and also take part in the Annual CPR (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation) drill.

 

Facilities at the Centre

The Centre has a waiting room, water treatment system to produce high quality dialysate and 7 haemodialysis machines.  High flux dialysers and low molecular weight heparin are used.

The Centre has the highest staff to patient ratio in Hong Kong (2:1).and the director has his nephrology clinic next to the Centre

The Centre does not have its own laboratory but a private clinical laboratory next door can provide routine laboratory service and urgent blood chemistry.

The Centre is one of the practicum training centre for the Professional Certificate in Renal Nursing.  It is also an evaluation centre for some instruments like the Transonic ultrasound  equipment for assessing vascular access.

  • Oxygen available through oxygen concentrator
  • 24 hour ambulatory blood pressure recording available
