Renal Nursing Training

One of the missions of the Integrated Dialysis Facilities (HK) Ltd is the training of nephrology nurses. From  1991 to 2000, the Centre had, in partnership with the Baptist Hospital and the Lions Kidney Educational Centre (LKCE) and the Hong Kong Kidney Foundation, organized 8 Certificate Renal Nursing courses. At total of 412 renal nurses were trained and they are now leaders in the renal service.

From 2010, our Centre and our partners organized the Professional Certificate in Renal Nursing in conjunction with the Open University of Hong Kong.   This program provides students with specialized training in renal nursing.

The students would need to attend clinical practicum in the Integrated Dialysis Facilities (HK) Ltd, the Renal Centre in the Hong Kong Baptist Hospital, the Kai Tak Dialysis Centre and the Lions Kidney Educational and Research Centre.  They would also need to attend the nephrology clinic of the Centre for attachment training.  It is the only renal course in Hong Kong with such clinical orientation and the students found it most useful.

From June 2010 to 2017, 8 courses had been organized and a total of 340 nurses were trained. This is a valuable source of  renal nurses for hospitals and renal centres.

The Professional Certificate in Renal Nursing course will start in 6 June, 2018 this year. To make the course up to date, we shall include topics like the Polycystic Kidney disease management and the Hypoxia induciable factor etc.

A steering committee meeting was held on 24 January, 2018 between the Integrated Dialysis Faciltieis (HK) Ltd, the Hong Kong Baptist Hospital, the Lions Kidney Educational Centre and the Open University of Hong Kong.
